Banana Split Cake

Invented a hundred years ago, the banana split is a dessert made of a banana split in to lengthwise, ice cream and various toppings. This very tasteful dessert can be topped with sauces, nuts, fruits and whipped cream.

Served in a boat, as its characteristic serving dish is called, the banana split can contain almost any suitable sweet ingredient one might imagine, starting with the flavored ice cream (vanilla, chocolate or strawberries are the most often used), to caramel topping, or pineapple, or vanilla (depending on the ice cream used in the recipe). Other topping are also available, and so are the fruits one can garnish with: cherries are the most common fruits included in the recipe.

The banana split has a much disputed history, many cities in America claiming to be the true inventors of the dessert. Four cities of America, each saying the exact same thing, but only one has a Banana Split Festival. Latrobe, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, the four of them have something related to the banana split history, but only Wilmington is famous for the festival, after a restaurant owner in Wilmington, named Ernest Hazard, created this ice cream-based dessert featuring a split banana and a wide range of flavored ice creams.

However, the main ingredient remaining consistent in this recipe is, of course, the banana. Here are the necessary ingredients needed to cook this easy, tasteful and refreshing dessert:

  • 1 1/2 cup of graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup of butter or margarine -softened to room temperature and halved
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 4 bananas, cut in half lengthwise
  • 8 oz. can of crushed pineapple
  • 8 oz. bar of cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup of chopped nuts
  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • Preparing the banana split cake takes some few simple steps. In a bowl, combine the graham cracker with half of the butter, mixing well. Put mixture into a baking pan and cook for five minutes at 350F degrees, then set aside and leave to cool. In another bowl, combine the sugar, the remaining butter, the egg and the vanilla and beat them until they reach a soft texture.

    Spread this mixture over the cooled crumbs, and then add a banana layer. Sprinkle pineapple over the bananas and half of the pineapple juice too. In another bowl, mix cream cheese with the remaining pineapple juice, until they reach a smooth texture, and then spread over the last layer of pineapple. Now top the cake with the chopped nuts. Before serving, refrigerate for a few hours or even overnight.
